45th VILLA DE BENASQUE INTERNATIONAL CHESS OPEN 2026. ROUND 5

American Grandmaster Brandon Jacobson defeated FM Markel Vesga on board one in barely two hours in the fifth round, becoming the sole leader after Petkov and Samant drew on board two.

In this first half of the tournament, Jacobson has shown himself to be the player in the best form and the most incisive over the five games.

On the following boards, Mikhail Antipov and José Gabriel Cardoso made the most of having the white pieces to score full points. By contrast, the three Grandmasters on the next boards who had the black pieces — Avila, Zoler and Castellanos — had to settle for draws.

International Masters Javier Habans and Aron Pasti scored full points on boards 8 and 9 and move into the chasing group behind Jacobson.

Among the Aragonese players, Sergio Atarés defeated Roberto Cifuentes and is the highest-ranked player together with Daniel Romero and Diego Vergara, a new signing for Jaime Casas of Monzón ahead of the Spanish Honour Division Championship.

The tournament’s star game has come earlier than expected and will pit the top two seeds against each other: leader Brandon Jacobson and Mikhail Antipov. It is undoubtedly the game to watch.

Tomorrow morning, Elizbar Ubilava will give a masterclass, while the various parallel activities continue. And with the arrival of the weekend, Benasque is sure to welcome many chess players.
